Araucaria cunninghamii is a species of tree that is native to the dry rainforests of Queensland, New South Wales, and Papua New Guinea. Hoop Pine grows rapidly upward to reach sunlight above the dense forest canopy, towering about 30-60m tall.
We source Hoop Pine from sustainably managed forests in Queensland, which established its first plantations in the 1920s. (AS/NZS 4708:2021, Responsible Wood / PEFC; AS 4707:2021 Chain of Custody).
Unlike conventional plywood, it is made in Melbourne at high standards using low-emission adhesives, resulting in flat, stable sheets with clean edges and minimal charring.
Because it’s both made and cut locally, we reduce transportation emissions and avoid excess packaging, creating a leaner, more sustainable supply chain.
Cork
Grown mainly in Portugal since the 13th century, cork is prized for being water-resistant, durable, and endlessly renewable.
It comes from the bark of the cork oak tree, which mainly grows in Portugal. Skilled harvesters peel it by hand, careful not to harm the tree, using techniques passed down through generations.
Most cork oak trees are over 100 years old, and it typically takes 33 years before they yield high quality cork. The bark regenerates every 9 years, and with each harvest, older trees absorb even more CO₂
Once used by the Romans line bags and satchels, cork is now enjoying a quiet resurgence in designer furniture and luxury interiors across Melbourne and Sydney.
Tung Oil
Pure tung oil is a natural, durable, and water-resistant finish that has been trusted by woodworkers and boatbuilders for thousands of years.
Pressed from the seeds of the tung tree, it penetrates the tight-grain surface of hoop pine ply, resulting in a resilient finish that won’t crack, peel or flake. Unlike petroleum-derived coatings, tung oil is food-safe and completely free from toxic fumes.
Because it remains flexible when cured, it allows the wood layers to breathe, which is essential in Australia’s diverse climate, especially in Melbourne, where you might experience all four seasons in a single day.
That’s why we use pure tung oil to finish our Tap Stands, a product that’s meant to be touched, held, and transported. It also brings out the natural grain of hoop pine, resulting in a warm and golden, look that signals care for craftsmanship and for each other.
